The implementation of the new state standard will support the assessment of potential health risks associated with coated items that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin, as well as the determination of compliance of jewelry and other metal items with safety requirements.
The Azerbaijan Institute of Standardization (AZSTAND), operating under the State Agency for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Control under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has adopted a new state standard for the jewelry industry — AZS EN 12472:2026 “Method for the Simulation of Accelerated Wear and Corrosion for the Detection of Nickel Release from Coated Items.”
The adoption of this state standard will facilitate the application of internationally recognized testing methods to determine the amount of nickel released from jewelry items upon contact with human skin. This will, in turn, support the assessment of the potential health risks associated with nickel exposure, contribute to the protection of consumer health, and facilitate the assessment of the compliance of jewelry and other metal items placed on the market with applicable safety requirements.
The draft state standard was adopted by AZSTAND based on a proposal submitted by the Technical Committee for Standardization on Precious Metals and Gemstones (AZSTAND/TC 36), established under the Consumer Goods Expertise Center LLC, operating under the State Agency for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Control under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and was included in the State Fund of Normative Documents on Standardization.
Note: The adopted document was developed based on the European Standard EN 12472:2020 “Method for the Simulation of Accelerated Wear and Corrosion for the Detection of Nickel Release from Coated Items.”
