Azerbaijan’s attainment of Member State status at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) will contribute to the international recognition of the country’s national metrology system, participation in international decision-making, access to advanced expertise and knowledge, and the use of BIPM calibration services.

The Republic of Azerbaijan has officially attained Member State status at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), moving up from the Associate Member status it had held since 2015. President Ilham Aliyev completed this long-running process on July 7, 2026, by signing the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Accession to the Metre Convention — accession to the Convention being one of the key requirements for Member State status at the BIPM.

The new status expands the international opportunities available to the Azerbaijan Metrology Institute (AzMİ), which operates under the State Agency for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Control under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It gives Azerbaijan greater international recognition for its national metrology system, a direct say in international metrological decisions, integration of its metrology infrastructure into the BIPM system, and free access to BIPM calibration services — all of which will help build up the country’s measurement standards base and calibration capabilities.

To date, AzMİ has registered 35 calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) in the BIPM Key Comparison Database (KCDB) and taken part in 11 international comparisons. As a member of the Euro-Asian Cooperation of National Metrological Institutions (COOMET), it is also represented in the International Committee for Weights and Measures Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA) on the Mutual Recognition of National Measurement Standards and of Calibration and Measurement Certificates Issued by National Metrology Institutes.
